Climate Smart Farmer Advisory

Since 2022, Oorja has been delivering Climate-Smart Farm Advisories to smallholder farmers across its operational areas, with the aim of raising awareness and promoting the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. These sessions equip farmers with practical knowledge to improve crop yields, increase incomes, and build resilience to climate change. Through these advisories, Oorja provides vital support to help farmers navigate climate-related challenges by promoting best practices that boost productivity while reducing environmental impact. Key focus areas include efficient water management, soil health testing, soil conservation, integrated pest management, crop diversification, and the use of climate-resilient crop varieties. In addition, Oorja advocates for sustainable inputs such as biofertilizers and biopesticides to lower greenhouse gas emissions and protect natural resources—ensuring the long-term sustainability of farming communities.

Last year, following an agricultural advisor's suggestion, I began making vermicompost and applied it to my potato crop with excellent results, reducing chemical fertiliser use. Since then, I’ve produced about three quintals of vermicompost and used it on my paddy and maize crops. I also transplanted paddy in one bigha using the SRI method, yielding 4 quintals and 80 kg, compared to 4 quintals and 8 kg from traditional planting.
